Unix is Not GNU
From Hackstop
Much as software commercialists try to persuade you otherwise, 'Linux' is not Unix. Linux is GNU Not Unix - a Unix clone.
GNU does most to supply you with software code access combined with cost-freedom. BSD-Unix-style licensing gives freedom to privatise open software. GNU licensing first resourced freedom to protect the public open-source software codebase, in the way that BSD/Unix wants not to commercially.
The LINUX® kernel is compiled portably and distributed freely using the GNU tools GCC and GPL, which makes Linux an important component of each GNU Operating System. LINUX® is not an operating system though, but an operating system kernel brandmark. Linux is most often distributed as part of a GNU licensed GNU/LINUX® operating system software set.
The Open Source brand profiteers parrot Eric Raymond (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Raymond), and make good money perpetrating utter confusion of the above points. These deny cost-freedom ideologically, to expropriate the GNU public assets' value via so-called 'Linux professionalism' etc.
Our job is to expose blatant pillaging of our software community, and to halt it. With vigour! :~)
